  1. How to identify EPA/GHG engine year

There are many ways to determine the EPA/GHG year of an engine. One way is through DTNA

Connect Vehicle Info.

  • Enter your Serial Number (last 6 digits of the VIN) and then scroll down to Engine and find "Series."
  • Within the name you will find:
  •   EPA07, EPA10, GHG14, or GHG17

A second way to determine EPA/GHG year is through (login to DDCSN required).

  • Navigate to >Parts >Parts/Engine Information >Model Numbering System
  • Then click on the appropriate engine link

  1. You should know the service maintenance requirements and intervals (found in Operators Manual on DDCSN or Preventative Maintenance manual in PSL).

Maintenance Schedules

  • oil change intervals
  • air filter change intervals

Fuel and DEF Fluid

  • fuel quality, fuel tank fill levels (full is better), and draining water and sediment out of tanks

It is important to understand the difference between the two cleaning processes to help the customer choose liquid cleaning over "bake-n-blow" method, which is a less expensive option, but significantly less effective, potentially destructive, and unapproved by Detroit.

  Bottom line: Detroit only recommends liquid clean process!

  1. Are you evaluating a DPF for core return?

It is important to understand the core return procedure to avoid confusion when returning parts for credit. This guide gives explanations and illustrations on what cores are acceptable to return for credit.

Customers are encouraged to k​eep their engines running in top shape to have a positive impact on the health of the ATS.
StepUP® Overhaul service program is designed to meet varying customer needs through every stage of their engine ownership experience. 
Be familiar with the four progressive overhaul levels for DD Series engines, which help customers maintain overall health of their engine and ATS.

As a technician, you can learn a lot from looking at the fault codes, especially for ATS issues.

Looking for codes related to failures can help with reassuring the issue at hand. Look for over-temp codes, absorption codes, plugging codes, fuel codes, and more. These codes have the date and time of the fault event and can help describe a complete story on an issue.
